MATERIAL DE MICROSCOPIA ELECTRÓNICA
Carbon Fibre and Carbon Rods
A range of carbon materials suitable for our carbon coaters are available. Carbon fibre can be supplied in standard purity or high purity and in varying lengths. Carbon rods are high purity and are available as 3.05mm diameter or 6.15mm diameter (depending upon coating system) and in various lengths and pack sizes.
High purity carbon fibre
Sometimes referred to as ‘braid’, carbon fibre consists of eight separate strands of individual carbon fibre braided together. The fibre is manufactured so that, when cut, the ends resist unravelling. The fibre density is about 1.6g/m.
High purity carbon rods
Carbon rods are typically used for evaporating (and sometimes shadowing) carbon onto specimens being prepared for either x-ray microanalysis (EDS or WDS) or transmission electron microscopy (TEM). All our carbon rods are high purity - spectroscopically - pure with less than 6ppm ash.
Shaping carbon rods
We strongly recommend the use of carbon rods with ‘stepped’ profiles. Tapered (pencil-like) profile rods can be used, but have two practical disadvantages over ‘stepped’ profile carbon rods:
- Electric resistance (and therefore evaporation characteristics) changes during evaporation
- During evaporation (if an FTM is not fitted) it is harder to estimate how much carbon has been evaporated from a tapered carbon rod. With ‘stepped’ profile carbon rods, an end point is reached when the entire first step has been evaporated
Storing carbon fibre and carbon rods
Carbon fibre and carbon rods should be stored in a clean, dry environment - if possible under vacuum or in a sealed vessel with an appropriate desiccating agent.
